Zhong Kui's Arsenal - Sword, Tablet, Mount, and the Two Generals
Zhong Kui's iconic gear and companions from the novels: demon-quelling sword, court tablet, White Ze mount, generals Hanyuan and Fuqu, and 300 spectral soldiers.
What equipment does Zhong Kui carry?
In Zhangui Zhuan, Zhong Kui’s loadout is established the moment he dies: he drifts south clutching a sword and a court tablet (hu), and both become his signature gear. The sword is the demon-quelling weapon present in nearly every version of the legend. The tablet is the rectangular plaque officials held at court — a ritual prop, a badge of rank, and a personal memo board all in one.
Why the tablet matters: it is a wonderfully specific detail. As a “demon-quelling official” Zhong Kui fights with a bureaucrat’s tool as much as a warrior’s blade — the visual of a judge-styled hero carrying court regalia into battle is exactly the kind of identity Black Myth: Zhong Kui seems to be building.
Who are the two generals?
The King of Hell assigns Zhong Kui two companions who mirror his own fate — able men destroyed by injustice:
- Hanyuan (含冤, “holding wrong”) — a wronged civil official who was framed and executed. In a darker note, in some other Zhong Kui stories the hero himself dies by striking a pillar; here it is Hanyuan who does, making him Zhong Kui’s literary double. He is the strategist: again and again it is Hanyuan who finds the clever solution when brute force fails.
- Fuqu (傅巽) — a military general with “hundred-pace archery” skill and superb combat power. He once served as a deputy in An Lushan’s rebel army and personally rescued An Lushan from a rout — only to be blamed for the very defeat and executed. The novel calls this the height of injustice.
The pair form a balanced “civil + military” duo: the brain and the brawn, both wronged men, both glad to serve a hero who represents the justice they were denied.
What is the White Ze mount?
Zhong Kui’s mount is a White Ze (白泽), a four-horned beast whose backstory is another injustice: it was once a minister of the Spring-Autumn state of Wu who framed Zhong Liang (a famous loyal minister), and was transformed into a beast as punishment — forever seeking redemption. Zhong Kui rides it into the hunt, and it becomes his signature steed.
Game relevance: a wronged pair of generals + a redeemed beast mount is a natural companion system — and it lines up with the confirmed hint that the game will feature multiple weapons and an expanded combat identity compared to Wukong’s staff.
What other assets does Zhong Kui command?
Beyond the companions and mount, the King of Hell also grants Zhong Kui three hundred spectral soldiers to command at will. And on his way out, he picks up a bat (or spirit guide) that can sense where ghosts are hiding — a “talent” that gives him a tracking ability from the very start.
That is a complete starting roster: sword + tablet, two named generals, a mount, a small army, and a guide. For a game that reportedly wants “multiple weapons” and a world full of scattered demons, this is close to a ready-made kit.
